A NEW SPECTROGRAPHIC DATA-BASE IS BEING PLANNED!

Another new database? Ah! But this one is DIFFERENT...

Project details

This project will establish a world-class database of historic astronomical observations that were taken on photographic plates during the first three-quarters of this century. The prime objective is to generate digital spectra for inclusion in modern analysis methods.

  • An on-line Contents Catalogue must be generated for each plate store. This task is best carried out locally
  • Plates will be sent on loan to our scanning laboratory, which we plan to establish at the Dominion Astrophysical Observatory, BC, Canada
  • Plates will be selected in order of scientific priority, and scanned digitally by expert staff
  • Some of the spectra will be incorporated into specific research analyses (pilot projects)
  • The extracted spectra will be placed in the public domain
  • The Contents Catalogues will be merged to form a Master Catalogue

The data-base and its peripheral operations will constitute the Spectroscopic Virtual Observatory.

This project is an IAU initiative through its Working Group for Spectroscopic Data Archives, a Division V Working Group.
